Here's how "Instant" HTML works:

First Check out the page formats. Pick one to start with. [Follow the "Let's Go" link below to find and choose the formats.]
Copy the format to a file on your computer* [It is a good idea to set up a special directory or "folder" for all of your homepage files. You can use the name I gave the file, or change the name to one more meaningful to you. I have used 8-character filenames so they will be the same on systems that don't recognize long filenames.]
Open the file in "Notebook," or "Wordpad" (i.e., a text editor).
Edit the text on the format page to suit your needs Just delete the words I have put there, and write in your own!
Next check out the graphics listings. Decide which ones you like.
Copy graphic images you want to use to a file on your computer.* Copy these files into the same directory/folder that you set up for the formatting pages, as above.
Open your webpage file and change the names of graphics to the ones you chose. [When you do this, be careful to change only the filenames and NOT the HTML tags.]
To check your progress, you can open your homepage in your browser and take a look. In Netscape, for instance, you just click the mouse on "File," then "Open Page," which brings up a pull-down menu that lets you browse for the file you have been editing. If all the files are in the same directory, then the graphics and the links should work just as if you had them on your server. You may need to check the help files on your browser to get details on how this works, if you don't use Netscape.
When you are finished, upload your completed page and all graphic images to a Geocities Neighborhood of your choice! When you have saved everything into a special folder/directory, you can just upload all the files in the folder. Or, if you are able to place a webpage in a directory provided by your Internet Service Provider (ISP), follow their instructions for doing the upload.

(* If you don't know how to copy or save a file or image from the internet
to your own hard disk, then you need to go through one or more of the tutorials
I have listed before you begin trying to use this "Instant HTML" method.
I highly recommend the Internet Navigator course.)

Got you convinced?

Here are some other methods to create a homepage without knowing HTML:

Use the Geocities Form method to create a single page.
Several Geocities sites have different methods you may like better. Try some of them.
If you belong to America Online, they have homepage helps starting at this page. To get to the info you need, you can click on the "Get A QuickStart" button at the top of the page, and/or the Help button which is directly beneath it.
If you belong to Compuserve, they will help you get started too.
Check out my old homepage helper page for some ideas.
Some Internet Service Providers (ISPs) provide guidelines.
You can collect Graphic Images from many sources.
Use various search engines to look up the topics.
There are various HTML Tutorials like this one you can use to learn to do your own HTML coding.

You may copy this file, then paste it into "Notepad" or "WordPad" to save the formatting and setup. Then use cut and paste to substitute your own text, and save your own JPEG files to substitute for the photos of my wrecked van. You can either retain the little line gifs, or substitute others from the ones provided in the website. Note that I have used a gif image for my e-mail address, and also used encoded characters to provide the hotlinked "mailto" address. I found a link for doing this on the Kim Komando website in 2007.
